Choosing a Fridge to Suit Your Needs

The fridge is one of the most important parts of the kitchen. Effective storage of food and produce keeps everyone nourished and healthy. While it’s difficult to go wrong with any of the major brands, for example, Westinghouse fridges, different models can offer varying storage solutions. Use this guide to know what to look for when choosing the right fridge for your kitchen.

Basic Design

Choose the configuration that best suits your needs:

  • Freezer on top. This is the most common configuration for fridges. The fridge section lies under the freezer, and the freezer is at eye level.
  • Freezer on bottom. The freezer will tend to be larger than usual in these models, and there’s less bending required to access the fridge.
  • Side-by-side freezer and fridge. These fridges tend to be larger capacity fridges, with fridge and freezer doors side-by-side to each other. Many model come with an ice cube and filtered water dispenser on the freezer door.
  • Two separate products. It’s possible to purchase a separate freezer and fridge.
  • Bar fridge. Compact and convenient, bar fridges can be stored under benches, and they come with their own in-built freezers.

Size or Capacity

Bar fridges tend to have storage capacities of around 100 to 120 litres, while standard fridge/freezers may have 350 to 500 litre capacity, including the freezer’s storage. Large capacity fridges may provide up to 700 litres of storage space.

While like dishwashers it’s always better to have a little bit of extra space in your fridge, check your storage requirements and choose the right-sized fridge to avoid excess capacity and energy use.

Finishing

The two most popular fridge finishings are white or stainless steel, and it’s worth considering which will better suit your kitchen décor. Other things to consider are the direction in which doors open up, where the fridge will be installed in your kitchen, and how this assist with access to the fridge or freezer. Some models come with an option to choose the opening side, which can be useful for smaller spaces.

Additional Options and Features

These are just some of the additional options to look out for:

  • Adjustable shelving. Most fridges will allow you to change the shelving around to suit your storage needs. Options include egg trays, removable door bins.
  • Defrosting compartment. A defrosting compartment or drawer can be useful for meats or seafood that need to be defrosted with care.
  • Quick cool compartment. Useful for making desserts or mixing drinks.
  • Glass or Spill-safe shelving. This feature protects items to lower shelves in case of spills.
  • Deodorisers and hygiene features. Most models come with in-built deodorisers and anti-bacterial or -mould surfaces contained in the internal surface of the fridge and freezer.
  • Dairy, vegetable, deli, and other compartments. Many fridges come with dairy, vegetable, deli, and other special compartments.
  • Lock options. Some fridges have safe lock drawers or sections for child-proofing your fridge and keeping alcohol and other products from accidental ingestion by young children.
  • Energy rating. The better the energy rating on your fridge, the lighter the impact on your bill and the environment.
